DoorDash vs. Instacart referral programs in 2026

DoorDash and Instacart both offer customer referral invitations, but they serve different everyday needs and apply different order, credit, and exclusion rules. Compare the live invitation before creating an account or placing a first order.

Quick answer

DoorDash is usually the more natural fit for prepared meals and restaurant delivery, while Instacart is usually the better fit for groceries and retailer orders. A referral should be secondary to the service you actually need. Open the personal invitation before registration, confirm the promotion appears, compare the complete checkout total, and follow the provider-controlled minimum, expiration, location, and product rules.

How the DoorDash customer referral works

DoorDash's consumer terms describe a registered user in good standing inviting an eligible friend through a unique personal link. The friend registers as a new DoorDash user and places the required initial order. The personal referral page supplies the current credit and qualifying conditions.

DoorDash says promotional offers may be limited to their intended audience and purpose, cannot be redeemed for cash, and may change or end. Its consumer terms also list delivery, service, small-order, expanded-range, regulatory, and other possible fees. Review the item prices, subtotal, taxes, fees, and optional tip—not only the referral credit—before ordering.

How the Instacart customer referral works

Instacart says a new customer must use the referrer-provided promo code by the deadline shown in the referrer's account. After the qualifying order is fulfilled, the referrer receives the stated reward. Instacart's current terms limit a new customer to one referral-code redemption and say the code cannot be applied retroactively.

Referral coupons can carry a qualifying subtotal, single-retailer, product, location, and expiration requirement. Instacart's current terms exclude alcohol and restaurant orders from referral discounts and exclude Washington residents from this referral offer. Fees, taxes, tips, restricted products, and Instacart+ charges are not covered by ordinary credits. Always read the specific coupon displayed in the account.

Which referral should you choose?

Choose the service that matches the order you already intended to place. Then compare the live offers:

  1. Order type: DoorDash usually fits restaurant meals; Instacart usually fits groceries and multi-item retailer orders.
  2. Local availability: Confirm the restaurant, retailer, delivery address, and service are available in your market.
  3. Eligible subtotal: Check which items count toward the minimum and whether taxes, fees, tips, or restricted products are excluded.
  4. Complete checkout cost: Compare item pricing, delivery and service fees, small-order or priority charges, taxes, and tip after the referral is applied.
  5. Ordinary usefulness: Select the service you would use again without a temporary promotion.
A discount is not automatically savings. A higher item price, unplanned order, or added fees can outweigh a referral credit.

How to protect referral tracking

  1. Open the exact personal referral link before creating the customer account.
  2. Stay in the same browser or app flow and confirm the expected promotion appears.
  3. Use accurate account and payment information and avoid creating duplicate or related accounts.
  4. Check the expiration, eligible market, minimum subtotal, products, and first-order rules before checkout.
  5. Save the invitation, coupon details, order confirmation, and final receipt until any eligible credit posts.
  6. If tracking fails, contact the provider's official customer support without posting private account or payment details.

Compare the real cost before ordering

DoorDash and Instacart can both show delivery and service charges, optional faster-delivery fees, location-based fees, taxes, and optional tips. Instacart also warns that retailer prices can differ from in-store prices and that replacements or weight adjustments can change the final total. DoorDash says its fees and pricing can vary by merchant, market, and use. Compare the final checkout screen against the same planned purchase—not against the referral headline alone.

  • Do not add unnecessary items merely to reach a referral minimum.
  • Review whether a membership trial begins or renews automatically.
  • Treat tips separately from platform fees; referral credits may not cover either.
  • Keep the final digital receipt so you can distinguish item charges, fees, taxes, tips, and credits.

How we compared the programs

We reviewed official DoorDash consumer terms and official Instacart referral, credit, and fee materials on November 2, 2026. We prioritized new-customer eligibility, referral attachment, qualifying orders, exclusions, fees, credit use, location limits, and ordinary customer fit. We did not rank either provider by the compensation a referral may generate and do not assume a temporary reward will remain available.
